Juneteenth will be the first new federal holiday in nearly 40 years after the passing of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983. The holiday honors the end of slavery by commemorating the date in 1865 when slaves in Texas finally learned the Civil War had ended and they were free. For Dr. Aman Nadhiri, a professor at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, it's a holiday that reflects America's struggle for a more perfect union. More.
